American Bar Association (ABA) Disaster Legal Services (DLS)

Description

The American Bar Association's Young Lawyers Division (ABA YLD) partners with FEMA to provide Disaster Legal Services (DLS) following a Presidentially declared major disaster. When activated, the program establishes a toll-free hotline staffed by volunteer attorneys who offer free legal assistance to disaster survivors.

Volunteer attorneys can answer basic legal questions and provide pro bono representation for disaster-related issues, including landlord-tenant disputes, insurance claims, consumer law, and navigating FEMA benefits.

Requirements
  • Must be a survivor of a federally declared major disaster where FEMA has activated the DLS program.
  • Must lack the resources to secure adequate legal representation (even if adequate resources were available prior to the disaster).
